Wrestling for the Top

Wrestling’s first league meet was last night against Capistrano Valley, but results were not ready by press time. “We want to win league and beat San Clemente,” commented senior 112-pounder Ryder White. This rivalry will finally come to an end this season when CIF will change the current South Coast League for wrestling. Varsity had promising results at the recent Temescal Canyon Duals on Dec. 11 and 12, going 6-4 against the county’s top ranked teams. “We went 1-4 on the first day and [Coach] Abedi was furious so the next day we went 5-0,” stated junior Austin Devon. Individually, DeVone went 10-0 with eight pins in the 160-pound weight class and got first place, narrowly missing winning MVP. Junior 215- pounder Kamron Abedi got third place, chipping a tooth in the process. Sophomore Cruz Merritt got second place in the 119 pound weight class, complete with seven pins and stitches above his right eye. Senior Nick Ogasa got second place in the 130-pound weight class. The team competed in the Cossarek Classic at Westminster High School Dec. 4 and 5. Overall, the team placed eighth, defeating rivals San Clemente, who placed fifteenth. DeVone, at the 160-pound weight class placed second, while senior Shane Savalle and Abedi placed sixth in the 152 and 215-pound weight classes, respectively.
